Samuel applies four tests to every significant enterprise decision: the People test, the Planet test, the Profit test, and the Purpose test. The People test asks whether this decision increases or decreases the dignity of those who work in and are served by the enterprise. The Planet test asks whether it operates within ecological limits and returns what it takes. The Profit test asks whether it generates the financial sustainability the mission requires — because a Kingdom enterprise that cannot pay its bills is not a virtue. And the Purpose test asks whether a thoughtful observer watching the decision would see evidence of the enterprise's stated values in it.
"He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God"
This week, apply all four tests to one enterprise decision — People, Planet, Profit, Purpose. Write down what passes and what fails. Act on one failure.
A business can be profitable, legally compliant, and simultaneously destructive to the dignity of its workers, the health of its ecological resource base, and the coherence of its stated values. The conventional bottom line measures only profit — which is necessary but insufficient. The Quadruple Bottom Line measures what the business actually does in the world, to specific people and specific ecosystems, within a stated framework of purpose.
- Businesses whose financial return is measured and whose human and ecological costs are externalised
- Practitioners who have never applied the People, Planet, and Purpose tests to their enterprise decisions
- The Kingdom vision for economic life remaining a Sunday aspiration rather than a Monday practice
Leviticus 19:13: Do not defraud or rob your neighbour. Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight. The People test in Leviticus: timely, full wages. No fraud. No robbery. The economic ethics of the Kingdom are specific enough to measure.
The world applies one test to enterprise decisions: will this increase financial return to the shareholders?
God applies at least four: does this serve the dignity of people, the health of creation, the financial sustainability of the mission, and the coherence of the enterprise's stated purpose?
Colossians 3:23-24: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. The Purpose test in Colossians: would you make this decision if you were certain God was watching? That is the coherence test.
"Lord, let every enterprise decision I make pass four tests, not one. Let my business produce dignity for people, care for creation, financial sustainability for the mission, and coherence with the values I have stated. In Jesus' name, Amen."
