The Contact Encounters programme produced a 47-percentage-point shift in cross-ethnic empathy in the Korean context. Not from information about the other group. From sustained structured personal encounter with specific people from it. The information was available. The encounter was not. That is the difference that produced the 47 points. Information about groups changes what people know. Encounter with specific people changes who they are. The Contact Encounters method is designed to produce the latter — through equal-status contact shared goals institutional support personal narrative exchange sufficient duration and structured reflection.
"Key verse: Acts 10:34 (KJV)"
This week commit to one sustained cross-cultural relationship — not information exchange but genuine personal encounter. Arrange the first meeting.
Diversity training cultural awareness programmes and intercultural education programmes all operate at the level of information — providing people with knowledge about groups different from their own. The research is consistent: information about groups rarely changes the fundamental empathy deficits that produce prejudice. What changes them is sustained personal encounter with specific people from those groups. The church that runs diversity programmes without creating the conditions for genuine encounter has invested in the wrong intervention.
- Communities whose members have more information about diversity and less genuine cross-cultural relationship than ever
- Churches running diversity programmes without creating the sustained personal encounter that produces actual change
- The 47-point empathy shift waiting to happen in communities where encounter has not yet been structured
John 4:9-10: The Samaritan woman said to him: You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? Jesus answered her: If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. The encounter at the well is a Contact Encounter: equal-status unexpected sustained and producing a 47-point shift in one Samaritan woman's understanding — and then her entire community's.
The world produces cross-cultural understanding through information exposure diversity training and cultural events.
God produces cross-cultural transformation through personal encounter — the specific meeting of specific people that changes not what they know but who they are becoming.
Ephesians 2:14: For he himself is our peace who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier the dividing wall of hostility. The barrier is destroyed not by information about the other group but by the encounter with the peace that is Christ — often mediated through a specific person across a specific cultural line.
"Lord make me someone who creates the conditions for encounter rather than merely providing information about difference. Let my life be a Contact Encounter for someone who needs one. In Jesus' name Amen."
