Marcus, the food entrepreneur, had been building an ethical, sustainable food business for three years when the Vocational Consecration Service happened at Covenant Life. He said afterward, ‘I did not know the church cared about that.’
That sentence is a diagnosis.
When a man who is doing genuinely redemptive work in the world—feeding people ethically, serving his employees with dignity, and caring for the ecological resource base he depends on—does not know whether his church considers that ministry, the church has failed him theologically.
The Vocational Consecration Service is the theological correction: the Monday-to-Friday work of believers is not secular work that happens to be done by Christians. It is Kingdom mission.
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
Today write three sentences about the Kingdom dimension of your specific work. What are you doing on Monday that serves the purposes God has for the world?
The implicit message of most church formation programmes is that the sacred life happens in church-related activity and the rest of life is secular territory managed as well as possible by sincere people. The Vocational Consecration service is a direct confrontation with this implicit message. It names what Marcus was doing as ministry. It commissions him publicly. It asks the congregation to pray for his work and support his deployment. And in doing so it communicates a different theology of vocation than the one Marcus had been living with.
- Believers whose professional lives are entirely disconnected from their church community
- Congregations that equip members for Sunday ministry but never name their Monday work as Kingdom mission
- Vocations that have never been named, prayed over, or sent by the covenant community
1 Peter 2:9: You are a chosen people a royal priesthood a holy nation God's special possession. The priestly function is not confined to the ordained. Every believer in every vocation is a priest — set apart to serve God in the specific sphere they inhabit.
The world separates professional identity from spiritual identity — treating work as a secular activity and faith as a private preference.
God commissions every believer's every vocation as Kingdom mission — and calls the church to name, equip, and send its members for the work they do Monday through Saturday.
Romans 12:1: Offer your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. The offering of the body, includes the offering of its daily labour. The workplace is a site of worship when the worker has been commissioned for it.
"Lord consecrate my Monday. Let the work of my hands, my mind, and my vocation be an act of worship that serves your purposes in the specific sphere you have placed me in. In Jesus' name Amen."

You may believe God is interested in the part of your life that happens on Sunday. He is not. He is interested in Monday — in your desk, your trade, your workshop, the ordinary hours no one calls sacred. He made you a priest in that place. Come to Him today, and let Him consecrate the whole of your life, not a corner of it
