The Arco Lesson
Romans 12 (KJV) Leviticus 25 (KJV) Luke 19 (KJV)

The Arco process ran for five years in a Colombian rural community where land conflict had produced violence displacement and a complete breakdown of civic relationship. Five years of structured truth-telling. Over two hundred individual mediation conversations. A formal reconciliation agreement celebrated in national media as a model. Eighteen months later it began to unravel. The land restitution the agreement promised was never implemented. People who had genuinely forgiven each other discovered that the material conditions of their lives had not changed. The soil of equity had not been prepared. The seed of relational reconciliation could not take root in it. The Arco lesson: relational reconciliation without structural justice does not hold.

Note: The ‘ARCO Lesson’ is an extract from Novel 11 of 12 of the Heal the World Novel Series book titled ‘All nations under one Head” and Sofia Okonkwo-Reyes named in the devotional as ‘Sofia’ is the Novel 11 Protagonist. ⚡ This Week's Action

Today examine one reconciliation process you are part of and ask: is there a structural element — material economic institutional — that has not yet been addressed? Name it.

Most Reconciliation Processes Invest in Relationship While Under-Investing in Restitution

Relational practitioners — Sofia included — are drawn to the relational dimension of reconciliation because it is where their skills are and because it produces visible and moving results. The structural dimension is slow expensive politically contentious and outside the direct control of the practitioner. The Arco failure happened not because the relational work was inadequate but because the structural dimension was systematically under-resourced.

  • Peace agreements that collapse when structural injustice goes unaddressed
  • Relationship restored without the material conditions of relationship changing
  • The community that has forgiven without receiving what covenant justice required

Luke 19:8: But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord: Look Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor and if I have cheated anybody out of anything I will pay back four times the amount. Genuine encounter with Jesus produced immediate structural restitution. The relational encounter and the material correction were inseparable in Zacchaeus's response. They should be inseparable in every reconciliation process.

🌐 World's View

The world separates relational reconciliation from structural justice — treating them as alternative approaches rather than inseparable dimensions of the same process.

✝️ God's View

God requires both: the truth-telling that makes relationship possible and the restitution that gives that relationship a just material foundation to stand on.

Leviticus 25:10: Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property. The Jubilee is the structural foundation of relational reconciliation — the material reset that allows relationship to exist on just ground.

⚖️
Morality
Zacchaeus-shaped repentance is the standard: a community that pairs forgiveness with restitution refuses the cheap morality of apology without cost, and forms people whose repentance is measured in what they return, not only in what they say
💚
Health
Forgiveness offered while the injustice remains breeds a quiet, corrosive resentment. Communities that address the material conditions alongside the relational wound release people from carrying reconciliation as a burden they alone must sustain
💰
Finances
Restitution is the economics of reconciliation. Land returned, debts released, and property restored give reconciled relationships a just material foundation — and spare communities the far greater cost of an accord that collapses eighteen months later.
🌿
Diet
Land restored is food restored — where restitution returns families to their property, reconciliation is measured in harvests, not only in handshakes.
🌍
Global Impact
Arco was celebrated in national media as a model and unravelled within eighteen months. A generation of peacemakers trained to pursue truth and restitution offers the world reconciliations that survive the headlines that announce them
