On the Sunday afternoon of her first week at Covenant Life Grace walked the streets around the church and knocked on forty-three doors. Twenty-one people were home. Fourteen knew the church existed. Twelve called it the building with the notice board. One described it as the place where they do the food thing. One elderly Jamaican woman who had lived on the street for forty years called it Grace Osei's old church — naming a pastor who had served there thirty years before. She was the only person on the street who connected the church to a person rather than a building. A church that its neighbourhood describes as a building with a notice board is not an embassy. It is a monument.
"Key verse: Matthew 5:14 (KJV)"
This week walk the streets immediately surrounding your church building. Ask yourself honestly: would this neighbourhood notice if we were gone? Let the answer shape your next proposal to leadership.
The Consumer Model of faith produces congregations of genuinely engaged members in an institution that is invisible to the community it inhabits. The church measures its success by the quality of the experience it provides internally while the neighbourhood it was placed in has no experience of it at all. The DVIS measures civic and community impact — and for most churches it reveals a catastrophic gap between internal vitality and external presence.
- Neighbourhoods unchanged despite decades of Christian congregation
- Congregation members engaged on Sunday and absent from public life Monday through Saturday
- The community deprived of what only the church can provide because the church has organised itself around what its members want to receive
John 17:18: As you sent me into the world I have sent them into the world. The sending is total. The presence goes wherever the sent people go. There is no domain of the neighbourhood marked God not welcome here — unless the people who carry the presence have decided not to go there.
The world expects religious institutions to serve their members and leave the community to other providers.
God commissioned the church as an embassy in foreign territory — representing Kingdom interests to the people and communities that need them most.
Acts 1:8: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Jerusalem first. The neighbourhood before the nation. The DVIS measures whether the church has been a witness in its own Jerusalem.
"Lord make our church an embassy not a refuge. Let us represent Your Kingdom to our neighbourhood in ways they cannot miss and cannot ignore. In Jesus' name Amen."
