Samuel Okonkwo was a private equity analyst for nine years before he asked the question he had been avoiding. Not what return can I generate. Not what asset can I acquire. But: who am I before what I earn? The framework places self-discovery before economic empowerment for the same reason the architect draws the foundation before designing the floors: the economic transformation Pillar 4 describes is impossible without the prior honest work of understanding what you are for before you decide what you will build.
"Key verse: Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)"
Today, spend fifteen minutes answering one question in writing: who am I before what I earn? Let the answer not be a list of roles or achievements. Let it be a statement about what you are for.
When identity is derived from earning capacity, the scarcity mindset becomes physiologically inevitable — because there is always someone earning more, always a threshold not yet reached, always a sense that the current level of production is insufficient to justify the sense of worth it was supposed to produce. Samuel recognised this in Year Seven of private equity. The work was excellent. The identity was hollow.
- Entrepreneurs who accumulate without knowing what their wealth is for
- Workers whose sense of worth rises and falls entirely with their income
- Communities shaped by an economy of self-justification rather than an economy of flourishing
Ephesians 2:10: We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. The identity precedes the works. The work flows from who God says you are, not from what the market says you are worth.
The world defines who you are by what you produce, earn, and accumulate.
God defined you before you produced anything — and that prior identity is the only foundation on which durable economic empowerment can be built.
Psalm 139:13-14: You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The most counter-cultural economic statement available: your worth was established before your first transaction.
"Lord, ground my identity in what You said about me before I produced anything. Free me from the scarcity mindset that derives worth from output. Show me what I was made to build — and let me build it from a foundation of identity, not anxiety. In Jesus' name, Amen."
