Nadia's grandfather did not understand the Sunday table as a private family ritual. He understood it as the formation of people who would serve Kumasi. Every conversation at that table was oriented outward: what was happening in the community, what the family's responsibility to it was, what the children could do to serve it. The GII's Civic Engagement metric measures whether the household is producing people who engage public life with ethical purpose — and whether that engagement is being modelled and transmitted.
"Key verse: Jeremiah 29:7 (KJV)"
This week, take one member of your household into one act of community service. Let them see that the household exists not only for itself.
The impulse to shield the family from the complexity and corruption of public life is understandable. It is also costly — to the community deprived of the household's contribution, and to the children who grow up believing that public life is for other people. The household that models civic engagement produces citizens. The household that withdraws from civic life produces private consumers.
- Communities deprived of the contribution of households that have turned inward
- Children growing up without a model of ethical public engagement
- The civic institutions that need formed people most, getting them least
Acts 16:31-34: The household of the Philippian jailer was baptised — and immediately hosted a meal. Conversion produced hospitality. The household became immediately outward-facing, welcoming the community into what it had received.
The world treats household privacy as a value to be protected — the family as a refuge from the demands of public life.
God designed the household as a formation centre for the public good — producing people who engage the city with the convictions formed at home.
Genesis 12:2: I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you. I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. The household is blessed in order to bless. The blessing has a direction — outward, toward the community.
"Lord, let our household be a blessing to our city. Let the formation that happens at our table produce people who serve the common good rather than retreat from it. Make us outward-facing, even in the formation of our most private spaces. In Jesus' name, Amen."
